['pɑθfaɪndə; englisch »Wegbereiter«, »Bahnbrecher«], Name einer amerikanischen Raumsonde (Start 4. 12. 1996) zur Erforschung des Mars, bei der erstmals ein geländegängiges Bodenfahrzeug eingesetzt wurde. Mithilfe des von der Erde ferngelenkten Marsmobils Sojourner (Länge 61 cm, Höhe 30 cm, Masse 11 kg, maximale Geschwindigkeit rund 60 cm/s) begann zwei Tage nach der Landung (4. 7. 1997) die erste mobile Erkundung einer fremden Planetenoberfläche. Zur Aufnahme stereoskopischer Bilder dienten zwei 15 cm voneinander entfernte Kameras. Der Marsboden wurde mithilfe eines Röntgenspektrometers chemisch analysiert. Er scheint danach das Verwitterungsprodukt basaltischen Eruptivgesteins zu sein und gleicht weitgehend dem an den Landestellen der Viking-Sonden. Einzelne untersuchte Steine lassen auf hochdifferenziertes Krustengestein schließen.
